Cancer Research Winter 10K LiverpoolSo it was actually snowing! (And there was some fake snow) but it was a great race.

I can finished in 48:53.  It was pretty hilly compared to the Cheshire 10k I did a few months ago.
I’m getting more confident that I could finish the next Cheshire 10k in under 48 mins now… and a time starting 47:xx suddenly sounds a lot closer to my goal of sub 45 mins.


Great fun, I’d really recommend next years race.

Starting and Finishing in the Liverpool Echo Arena was fantastic!  You were in the warmth, the baggage drop was very well organised.

There was even the opportunity for your photo with a polar bear if you wanted it (Man in a suit – lol).

Transport was easy, train there and back.

Medal awarded was nice too – all round good run!

I’m a fairly keen (but not very fast) runner, and I’ve had both the TomTom Watch and Apple Watch for a while now.

I hadn’t compared both, as the Apple Watch was waiting for both the OS2 update, and finally the Strava update that could link in to the heart rate data from the Apple Watch.

Last week, Strava updated their watch companion app, so there was nothing stopping me.

I went out for a run last night, a route I run regularly, with some hills, flats and knew was a nice distance to test the two out on.

Both the TomTom and Apple Watch will monitor my heart rate.  I did my best to start and stop them both at the same time, and you’ll see from the images below that there is only a couple of seconds different between the two times.

Strava didn’t initially see my run from the TomTom watch, only ,y run from my Apple Watch.  I’m presuming that it received two almost identical runs within seconds of each other and chose one.  I was however, able to save both runs as .gpx files to export them.

I exported the data to run keeper, as that’s been my go to running app over the last 24 months since I started running.  I also use the ‘compare’ feature, which gives me a very nice comparison between by two runs.

The images below are from my test run.  The Orange colour is the TomTom, the Blue is the Apple Watch.  You’ll notice they’re almost the same:

Calories, very similar.
Elevation, almost identical.
Pace, similar, although I feel the Apple watch took about 2 mins to get it right.

The strange difference though was the distance.

The TomTom measured the distance as 4.53 miles.  The Apple watch 4.63 miles.  Doesn’t sound much, but one of them is out by 1%.

The TomTom records my average pace as 8.24 min/miles.
The Apple Watch records my average page as 8.14 min/miles.

Thats quite a difference when you run regularly, setting off 10s per mile too quickly or slowly can have a real difference on your performance over a 10k or half marathon.

I’m going ot ask a friend with a Garmin watch to run the same route with me next week to get a 3rd distance measurement.  My gut feeling is that the TomTom is going to be the accurate distance.

Nice bright screen, very easy to read.

You have to run with your phone.
I don’t think the distance is quite accurate.

In Summary  –  If you’re not a serious runner and don’t already have a running watch, your Apple Watch going to be fine what you want to record. You’re probably more interested in your general distance, calorie use and overall distance and time.  It will record everything the TomTom does and its very nice and compact.

However if you’re a more serious runner, in my opinion the Apple watch isn’t quite as good as a running watch designed specifically for the task, but a very good 2nd place.

I’m amazed, I finally did it.  Sub 50min 10k.  I feel like a proper runner now.

I took 5 minutes off my previous best on the same course 6 months ago.
48:30 – VERY happy with that, as was aiming for 50mins something i.e. 50:40

Maybe going to the gym a few times a week really is making that much of a difference!

New Half Marathon PB

I was aiming for under 2 hours, as my last few 10 miles runs hadn’t been great.  But after 6 miles I was still feeling really comfy, and at 9 miles I still felt fresh.  Maybe all the running I’m doing is starting to pay off, I took a minute off my old PB 5 weeks ago and finished in 1:56:25 – I think I actually enjoyed the race!

New 10k Time

2015-01-11 23.57.11So I ran a 10k in 55:19 last week.

Still not quick, but there were 2 things i was really please about:

i) The first time I averaged under 9min miles.
ii) It was 11 minutes quicker than the same course I ran last year!

So slowly I’m getting somewhere!

More Running

So my running is getting there, another 2 mins off my PB this weekend at Port Sunlight.
It felt slow, but it was actually a descent time 🙂   56.27

Keep On Running

So I’m still running after 7 months, I’ve impressed myself!

I beat my last 10k time by 6 minutes at the weekend in the Oulton Park 10k. I was aiming for under an hour, and achieved 58m20s.

Slowly but surely my times are coming down, I’m running under 9.15s per mike regularly now.

I’m hoping to run the Cheshire 10k at the end of March, but have the Liverpool Half Marathon the week before. (If I just get round the 13 miles I’ll be happy!)


Santa Dash 2013

I had great fun on my Birthday yesterday running the Liverpool Santa Dash 2013, it’s certainly something I’ll be doing again next year!  It also reminded me to update my running page.

santadash2013 You can actually see me and my eldest in the bottom left hand corner of this picture! I’m amazed. I thought with almost 10,000 people all dressed as Santa the chances of finding us were almost zero.

If you haven’t done it before, I’d really recommend it, get together with a few friends and give it a go.
